  • The program aims to help develop research skills and train highly qualified personnel by supporting students who have demonstrated a high standard of achievement in their undergraduate and early graduate studies.
  • The CGS M program supports up to 3,000 students annually in all disciplines and is administered jointly by Canada's three granting agencies: CIHR, NSERC, and SSHRC.
  • Students submit their application to the institution at which they intend to hold their award using the Research Portal.

Eligibility Criteria:

To be eligible to apply for this opportunity, you must meet the following criteria:

  1. Hold Canadian citizenship, permanent residency in Canada, or Protected Person status according to subsection 95(2) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada) by the application deadline.

  2. Be enrolled in, applied for, or planning to apply for full-time admission to a qualifying graduate program at the master's or doctoral level at a Canadian institution with an allocated CGS M (Canada Graduate Scholarships-Master's) spot.

  3. Adhere to the internal application deadline set by your chosen Canadian institution for your intended program of study. Contact the appropriate faculty of graduate studies (or equivalent department) for precise details.

  4. Have completed, as of December 31 of the application year:

    • 0 to 12 months of full-time studies (or equivalent) in the program for which you're seeking funding. This program could be a master’s, doctoral (direct-entry), combined master’s-doctoral, fast-track master’s transitioning to a doctoral program, or a master’s program transitioning into an eligible doctoral program.
    • 4 to 12 months of full-time study (or equivalent) in an eligible master's program. The program's degree requirements should be met before activating the award during the first 12 months of the subsequent doctoral program.
  5. Not currently possess or have previously held a CGS M scholarship from CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC.

  6. Have maintained a first-class average in the last two completed years of study (full-time equivalent), as determined by the host institution.
