There are plenty of scholarships available out there that don’t require IELTS! If you are preparing to study abroad, get your degree in another country, or just want to be able to travel more, it’s important to know where you can find the money to do so. Here are several options that won’t require you to take the dreaded IELTS exam.
Who awards these types of scholarships?
These are merit-based scholarships, which means you’ll have to show that you deserve them—usually with high grades. It helps if you’re planning on studying or working in an area of growing demand in your country, too.

How are they awarded?
With financial aid and scholarships, federal and state governments award billions of dollars in aid annually. The government has set out several guidelines for awarding certain types of aid. If you want to tap into government scholarships, there are two main types: merit-based aid and need-based aid.
A federal or state agency usually administers both types, though sometimes it is divided between various agencies. It’s up to you to research each type of aid program and decide which one is best for your situation.
Where do you apply for these scholarships?
Whether you’re applying for undergraduate or graduate studies, there are many government-based scholarships in Australia that don’t require applicants to sit an English language test.
In fact, more than 50 scholarships offered by governments and non-government organizations don’t demand you sit an English language test as part of your application process.

How do you win the most competitive ones?
A good strategy is to look for awards that don’t require English-language proficiency. The majority of countries now recognize that fluency in English is not necessarily required to succeed in higher education. So, if you speak another language – or can get by on French, German or another international language – there are opportunities available to you.
Spain, for example, offers more than 1,500 international scholarships for students who are proficient in Spanish and don’t need to sit an exam.
